                   The Eight Hundred

A film review by Luís Lin and Mateus Silva

The film is a historical drama set in the year 1937 in the city of Shanghai. It tells the story of 452 Chinese soldiers during the Sino-Japanese War. They are on a mission to cover their army’s retreat against 20 thousand strong Japanese soldiers from the perspective of a young farmer turned conscript named Duan Wu, who recently attempted to desert to the nearby British concession.
It features famous Chinese actors like Oho Ou as Duan Wu and celebrities like Li Cheng and Vision Wei, who played supporting roles in the movie. What I liked in the film were the realistic special effects, the use of specific soundtracks to represent the emotions and tension felt in the battle scenes, and especially the performances of the actors who portrayed realistic emotions as though they were genuinely feeling them. In my opinion, the film did an exceptional job in portraying the horrors of war and telling us, the viewers, a dramatic representation of the battle that happened in real life. It did a great job at honoring the martyrs who died defending their homeland against foreign invasions.
