What is interesting about the English language?

Through time, the English language has evolved and grown to be one of the most widely spoken one. Actually, it is considered the lingua franca, which means that people who speak different languages communicate in English.

Here are some interesting facts about the English language:

-English has its origins in Old High German, Old Norse and Anglo Norman but most words originate from French and Old English. After the Normans defeated the English army (1066), French became the official language in Britain. However, lower classes continued to use Old English at the same time. Modern English started being used in the 14th century.

-English is spoken by 952 million people worldwide (339 millions speak English as a first language and 603 millions speak it as second language)

-It is the official language in 67 countries and 27 non-sovereign countries such as Hong-kong. In the USA, it is recognized as the official language only in some states and not at the federal level.

-It is the only language which capitalizes first-person pronouns.

-English has over 160 different dialects.

Whether you like the English language or not, it is undeniable that it is a versatile language with fascinating facts to learn about.

                                                             "Bullfighting - spectacle or gratuitous violence"

Hello

Today I am going to talk about the topic "Bullfighting - spectacle or gratuitous violence". I chose this topic because I like animals.

This topic is talked about around the world due to the mistreatment of animals, which is why I am against bullfighting.

My arguments against bullfighting are the cruelty that animals suffer during shows and the psychological impact on animals. Even though in Portugal it is prohibited to kill the bull in the arena, with the exception of Barrancos (in the Alentejo area) this type of "spectacle" causes

serious injuries and has a psychological impact.

After the shows, these protagonists (bulls) become afraid or too aggressive towards other animals.

Legally, it is a spectacle that, due to taste or culture, causes animals suffering. The show is open to all types of audiences, including children who learn that mistreating animals is a crime but bullfighting is not!

Animals are put into this type of show without being able to choose whether they want to do it or not! After all, the animals are mistreated.

"Don't do to animals what you don't want to happen to you", because I don't think it's right for animals to suffer for human entertainment.

April 25th!

Hey, let's talk about some interesting things about the 25th of April!

Did you know that April 25th is a big deal in Portugal? They call it the Carnation Revolution. It's a day when people feel hopeful and free, like when you smell flowers in the air.

But that's not all!

Come with me as we learn about how a simple flower started a big change, how music helped make things better, and how Portugal's fight for freedom still inspires people everywhere. Get ready to discover the specialness of the April revolution as never before!

In Portugal, April 25th is called the Carnation Revolution. Back in 1974, they ended a long dictatorship without violence. People put red carnations into soldiers' gun barrels, showing they wanted peace and freedom.

Since then, the date is known as Freedom Day (Dia da Liberdade) in Portugal. It's a special day when people remember and celebrate democracy and human rights.

During the Carnation Revolution, music was important. Songs like "Grândola, Vila Morena" by Zeca Afonso were secret signals to start the movement. Today, these songs are like anthems of freedom.

In Lisbon, many tourists visit places linked to the Carnation Revolution, like the Largo do Carmo. That's where an important moment of the military coup happened.

The Carnation Revolution got support from other countries and movements around the world. It showed that fighting for freedom can inspire many others.

April 25th isn't just a holiday; it's a reminder of the fight for freedom and why it's important to defend human rights.

Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere, located in Oceania and its capital is Canberra. Despite not having an official language, English is the most used and is therefore considered the official language. Its territory is 7,692,024 km2, and it is the 6th largest country (in terms of territory).

Traditions/ Customs:

• Australians love to wake up early and end the day early;

• It's not possible to drink alcoholic beverages in public places;

• They love sports such as surfing, cricket and rugby;

• They hate delays because punctuality for them is a matter of honor;

• In Brisbane, there has been annual cockroach race since 1988.

Food: It is possible to find some of these foods in other countries because the typical Australian cuisine is a combination of other European and Asian countries.

                                                                                            Thailand

I chose Thailand because  it's an interesting country and it has got a diverse culture.

It's a country located in Southeast Asia. Thai is the spoken language there. Its capital is Bangkok with the population of 71,6 millions.

In Thailand there are many interesting things to do such as visiting temples, going to beaches and restaurants. If you do decide to stay in Bangkok, Wat Arun is a beautiful and less-touristy temple. In Thailand, most of the beaches have exactly what people are looking for; that's why it is a top destination for beach lovers and travelers. The most famous beaches are Ao yai, Koh phayam; Koh tarutao; Railay beach, Krabi; Koh tachai.

We can also talk about the delicious Thai food. Some of the most famous dishes in Thailand are Guay teow; Tom kha goi; Som tam; Yam pla dook foo (fried catfish with green mango salad); laab(spicy salad).

When you decide to go to Thailand, you cannot miss traditional events. There are many festivals throughout the year and you can choose the ones that best suit you. These festivals are: Monkey buffet Festival in Lopburi; Light up the night sky- Chiang Mai Yi Peng lantern festival; Not for the squamish- Vegetarian Festival.

There are numerous interesting facts about Thailand such as the different landscapes, its culture, its natural resources and its history. Here are some fun facts about Thailand: firstly, Thailand has a monarchy and secondly, the movie The Beach with Leonardo Dicaprio takes place in one of its islands.

𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏

Sweden is a Nordic country, located on the Scandinavian peninsula, in northern Europe.

Its capital is Stockholm, so its native languages are Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, German and some international students speak English.

Sweden has 10.42 million inhabitants, a territorial area of 407,311 km2 and a width of 499 km, making it the third largest country in Europe in terms of surface.

Traditions:

✐ Fredagsmys (the Swedish plan this throughout the week and when Friday arrives they have a family dinner with all kinds of food like tacos or pizza and they also have fun with board games or video games, celebrating the hard work they put in during this every week)

✐Kosläpp (it's an event in which cows are released from the pen, because of a law that Sweden has against locking up animals)

✐ Fika (it's a custom of taking coffee breaks and resting from long work. While it's just a daily routine, they believe it's also a way of solving problems)

Finally, Sweden is known for its great history and traditions!

Canada is a country located in North America. Its capital is Ottawa and its main language is English, although in Quebec the main language is French.

Canada is divided into 10 states. It is the country with the second largest area in the world and much of this country is made up of ice.

Traditions

• the traditional costume of this country is the Cangas.

• one of the typical foods of Canada is Poutine, which was created by the French part of Canada.

• Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd and consists of observing a groundhog's behaviour. According to tradition, it is able to predict the length of winter that year.

  
  

  Lastly, Canada is also famous for hockey on ice as we all know.

                                                                                   Northern Ireland

Hello everyone, today I am going to talk about Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland belongs to the United Kingdom, unlike Ireland. Previously, Northern Ireland belonged to the European Union but left in 2020. The capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast, the city with the most inhabitants in Northern Ireland. Its official language is English, but there are also towns  and signs in Gaelic.

History

Ireland and Northern Ireland used to be one country. In 1921, there was separation due to religious conflicts and Northern Ireland was created. The reason for this separation was because in the past there were many conflicts between Catholics and Protestants. There is a film that reports these problems - its name is “Belfast”. Only in 1998 both parties made an agreement to resolve the conflicts and thus the "Good Friday Agreement" was signed.
