Mais um texto, desta vez de Lucas Gomes, 11ºC., sobre uma celebração intercultural, subcategoria "The World around Us".

CarnaWest

Hello, my name is Lucas. I would like to dedicate my presentation to CarnaWest, a Brazilian Carnival that takes place in Canada, more precisely in New Westminster, Vancouver.
The CarnaWest festivals started in 2018. Unfortunately, there was only one more festival that happened in 2019 due to COVID-19 starting in the following year. As of now, we still don't have news on whether the festival is coming back or not.
The intention of CarnaWest is to gather Brazilians from the area to cherish their culture, thus keeping a sense of home away from home, and to share the Brazilian culture with the people of Vancouver. The event consists of a Brazilian concert, which is CarnaWest's main feature, and some tents with Brazilian-related items, such as clothes, food, ornaments, alongside others.
When I went to the festival in 2019, my main goal was to eat a "pastel", which was a rare delicacy in Canada. A difference from the 2018 event to the 2019's was that CarnaWest made a partnership with a little nomad business called "WhataFood." Their tent was the spotlight of the event, which was unfortunate for me because I had to wait a few hours in line to get my "pastel". While waiting, I remember the concert playing "pimba" music, and one song that got my attention was "Dança da Vassoura." It was humorous to see the non-Portuguese speakers dancing to the song as if it was Samba due to its rhythm being very similar to the genre.
Despite not staying long, I enjoyed my time in the carnival and cherished the homelike feeling radiating from the event. If the CarnaWest's organisers decide to resume the festivities, maybe you could get a chance to participate in this "home away from home" experience.
