Did you know that the Vikings were some of the toughest men in history books? However, they cared about their appearance enough, so make-up was part of their everyday routine.

It's believed that both male and female Vikings wore make-up on certain occasions, in particular kohl as eyeliner.  The main uses for kohl are derived from aesthetic appeal as well as protection from the damaging sun’s rays. Other sources state that it was also an effective way to ward off insects that could irritate the eyes while someone was asleep. What’s not always discussed though is the potential purpose of the Vikings wearing makeup as part of a wartime strategy.
