No âmbito do projeto "Take a Minute, Take Five", publicamos curiosidades sobre uma espécie animal não muito conhecida, da autoria de Guilherme Barros, 8ºA, na subcategoria "Did you know? Now you know".

Endangered species - The malayan tapir

Endangered species are species that are very close to becoming extinct in the future. They can be classified as endangered species because of factors like habitat loss, climate change, invasive species or poaching, factors normally caused by human beings.

I’m going to talk about one endangered species that few people know, the malayan tapir. This species is classified as an endangered species, because of habitat loss, caused by deforestation and logging. The malayan tapir, also called asian tapir, asiatic tapir, oriental tapir, Indian tapir, piebald tapir or black-and-white tapir, is the only tapir species that lives outside the Americas. It is native to Southeast Asia, from the Malay peninsula to Sumatra. It is on the endangered species list since 2008, for 17 years now, and fewer than 2500 mature individuals as estimated population.

The malayan tapir is easily identified, because of its black and white skin and it’s the largest species of tapir in existence. The Malayan tapir’s diet is based on plants, so it is herbivorous. Itsdiet is diversified, because this species can eat 115 species of different plants, but 30 of them are particularly preferred.

To save endangered species from extinction, we can do a lot of things, some of them so much simpler than others. We can learn about the endangered species and teach our friends and family about them, volunteer for reforestation and habitat recovery projects, not purchasing things that are made from body parts of those endangered species, reduce water consumption and pollution and report if you see animals suffering.
