The World Around Us: The Devastating Storms That Hit Portugal
Over the past few weeks, Portugal has been struck by a series of powerful storms, causing widespread disruption and serious human impact. Storm Ingrid was the first, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, snow in unusual areas, and rough seas along the coast. Emergency services reported hundreds of incidents, including flooding, fallen trees, and blocked roads across northern and central regions.
Shortly after, Storm Kristin hit with extraordinary force. Gusts exceeded 200 km/h, tearing roofs from buildings, knocking down trees, and leaving thousands without electricity. Over 5,000 incidents were recorded, and schools, transport links, and services were disrupted for days.
Several people lost their lives, and many communities struggled to cope. Authorities issued warnings regarding safety, water, and food. These events highlight how extreme weather is becoming more frequent in Portugal and stress the importance of preparedness, resilient infrastructure, and rapid response to protect everyday life.
