Did you know these facts about reindeer? Now you know.
As we are in the winter season, I will talk about some curiosities about reindeer, because I think we don’t really pay attention to them outside of Santa’s stories.
Reindeer (or caribou) are a species of deer adapted to living in cold northern climates, such as the Arctic and northern forests. Because they live in extremely cold environments, their hooves change with the seasons. In summer, the hooves are softer for walking on spongy ground, while in winter they harden to give better traction on ice. They can also lower the temperature of their legs. To conserve heat, they allow their legs to become much colder than their core.
Another fascinating fact related to temperature is that their noses really do help “warm the air.” Thanks to a special nasal structure, they can warm the cold air before it reaches their lungs.
Reindeer are incredible travelers. Some herds migrate over 4,800 km a year — one of the longest migrations of any land animal. They can also see ultraviolet light, which helps them spot predators and food in the snowy Arctic, where UV light is highly reflected.
Reindeer are truly remarkable and incredible animals!
